Osteopathy for Small Animals

Sharon is the resident osteopath at The Bishop’s Veterinary Surgery, Hatfield, where she runs a referral clinic for the osteopathic treatment of small animals.

Osteopathy can help animals cope with many problems and conditions affecting the musculo-skeletal system; including minor orthopaedic problems. These range from soft tissue (muscle, tendon and ligament injuries) to developmental and degenerative problems which may result in joint and arthritic pain in the elderly and some younger animals. Owners may bring animals to see an osteopath for unexplained changes in behaviour, perhaps refusing to jump into a car, onto a sofa etc; and also if they compete or work their animals.

All ages, breeds and species can benefit from osteopathic treatment, the most common being horses, dogs and cats.

To ensure the best care of any animal, osteopaths work in conjunction with the animal’s veterinary surgeon. The osteopath will obtain a referral letter and relevant clinical history from the animal’s veterinary surgeon. Any investigatory work is normally undertaken by the referring vet prior to starting treatment.

We involve you, the owner, by offering aftercare guidance to help aid the recovery of the animal in the home environment.

You can make an appointment for your animal by contacting Sharon directly or by telephoning The Bishop’s Veterinary Surgery.
